The Kamdhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow of the Pushtimarg tradition, shown draped in her vastra, the sacred cloth in which the sacred cow and the deity are adorned for darshan. Hand-formed in 925 sterling silver and finished entirely in hand-laid enamel, with no stones to draw the eye: this is the motif at its purest, carried by colour and craft alone.
The art belongs to Nathdwara, where Pichwai painting has adorned the shrine of Shrinathji for more than three centuries. The vastra is the heart of that tradition, the act of dressing, of offering, of care, and rendering it in enamel keeps the piece closest to the painted original from which it descends. The enamel is laid by eye in the deep temple palette, so no two are quite alike.
At 2.25 inches, this is the largest of our Vastra brooches, a piece with real presence on the lapel. It is worn on the bandhgala, sherwani, or blazer, and equally as a saree pin or sir pench. A devotional object first, a piece of fine jewellery always.
